What Herbs Are Used Here?
Mullen: a powerful herb that can help maintain a healthy respiratory system. As the first and most potent herb in this formula, the leaves and flowers of this herb are extracted into this tincture to act as an expectorant – allowing mucus to detach from your respiratory system and be expelled.
Lung Worth: Pulmonaria officinalis, the scientific name of this herb is well-known for its therapeutic properties, and is often used as a remedy for various lung disorders. Its’ high mucilage content is incredibly helpful in all respiratory issues, especially asthma and chronic bronchitis. Lungwort is also a potent astringent and expectorant, anticoagulant, anti-microbial, and anti-inflammatory, and is great at treating post-illnesses.
Wild Oregano: this herb (and spice!) contains two main active compounds: carvacrol (antibacterial) and thymol (antifungal). Oregano also acts as an expectorant, as well as a soothing agent for inflammation. Oregano is often used in spices as an immune booster and it can promote the removal of toxins from the body, as well as provide relief from allergy symptoms. This potent herb aids in the relief of congestion and improved airflow as well, and is a definite must to have during these cold months!
Marshmallow Root: in its original and potent form, this medicinal supplement includes flavonoid antioxidants, some amino acids, polysaccharides like pectin/fiber and various antiviral, antibacterial and anti-mucilaginous compounds, such as coumarin, kaempferol, phenolic acids, quercetin and tannins. Using the leaves and root of a marshmallow herb provides a moisturizing agent, which is best used for inflammation of the mucosal membranes that line the respiratory tract. This herb also allows for the break down of mucus, and is a natural bacteria killer!
Slippery Elm Bark: this herb (similar to Marshmallow) is used as a demulcent for throat irritation, either due to inflammation or coughing. When mixed with water, slippery elm takes on a gel-like substance, and allows for the coating and soothing of the mouth, throat, stomach and intestines.
White Pine Needles: this herb, when used in tea or tinctures, expels many beneficial vitamins necessary for daily use, including Vitamin A and C, alpha-Pinene, beta-Pinene, beta-Phellandrene, D-Limonene, Germacrene D, 3-Carene and Caryophyllene. When used in combination with other herbs, white pine needles act as a wonderful addition to expectorants, and is also helpful in relieving chest congestion and sore throats.
Coltsfoot- scientifically known as Tissilago Farfara, this herb- widely used throughout Europe, Russia and China- helps treat respiratory ailments. The most common use of Coltsfoot is for irritated respiratory tracts that include symptoms of “ticklish coughs.” This herb can also be used to treat hot and cold bronchitis.
